The first images have been released from Pistol – Danny Boyle’s new series about legendary punk group the Sex Pistols.

Based on guitarist Steve Jones’ 2018 memoir Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol, the series stars Anson Boon as Johnny Rotten, Louis Partridge as Sid Vicious, Jacob Slater as drummer Paul Cook and Babyteeth‘s Toby Wallace as Jones. Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams appears as punk icon Jordan and The Queen Gambit’s Thomas Brodie-Sangster will play Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren with Talulah Riley (St Trinian’s) as his partner Vivienne Westwood.

Boyle, who will direct the series, described the group’s mid-70s breakthrough as “the moment that British society and culture changed forever”.

“Imagine breaking into the world of The Crown and Downton Abbey with your mates and screaming your songs and your fury at all they represent,” the Trainspotting director said. “This is the moment that British society and culture changed forever.

“It is the detonation point for British street culture… where ordinary young people had the stage and vented their fury and their fashion… and everyone had to watch and listen… and everyone feared them or followed them. The Sex Pistols.

“At its centre was a young charming illiterate kleptomaniac – a hero for the times – Steve Jones, who became in his own words, the 94th greatest guitarist of all time. This is how he got there.”

Pistol has been created for TV by Craig Pearce (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge!) and written by Pearce with Frank Cottrell-Boyce (24 Hour Party People, Doctor Who). The limited series will begin filming on 7 March. There’s no word yet, however, on when it’ll be transmitted.
