From Trance to Tranquility: Armin van Buuren Drops First Acoustic Album, “Piano”
The trance icon opens a new chapter with a deeply personal collection of piano-driven compositions.
Armin van Buuren has always known how to move a crowd, but on Piano, he invites listeners to embrace the calm.
With his first-ever acoustic album, the trance icon reveals a dimension that’s long existed beneath his stadium-filling sets. “This project shows another side of me: intimate, honest, direct,” van Buuren said in a press release shared with EDM.com.
The resulting compositions move with a cinematic sense of pacing and purpose. He rehearsed each piece intensely before committing it to tape in a single take, according to a press release.
Rather than grandiose orchestration, the strength of the album lies in its melodies unfolding patiently, drawing influence from Satie, Chopin and the ambient side of electronic music that shaped van Buuren’s early listening habits.
“Creating melodies behind the piano has always been the foundation of my music,” van Buuren explained. This time, however, those sketches have remained raw and reflective, shaped by the support of composer and mentor Geronimo Snijtsheuvel, who guided him through the album’s creative sessions.
Captured over the course of seven days at Utrecht’s ConcertLab, the album’s arc began creatively with “Fathers and Sons,” a tender composition inspired by van Buuren’s relationship with his father and his own journey through parenthood. To that end, each composition draws from personal relationships and formative musical influences.
The 15-track album arrived exclusively via Apple Music on October 31st and will hit other major platforms on November 7th. You can listen to Piano below.
