Song Review: Kami wa Saikoro wo Furanai – Meguru Meguru

I’m breaking my own rules and writing a review for a song that was released well over a month ago. I kept thinking Meguru Meguru (巡る巡る) would get an actual music video and I’d be able to feature it on the blog at that point. But, we’re stuck with a region-blocked lyric video for now, making this neither full-on “single” nor “buried treasure” – at least according to Bias List rules. And with both a band name and song title entirely in Japanese, this may not be the most accessible thing I’ve ever posted.

But, Meguru Meguru has been a staple on my playlist for weeks. The band’s Japanese name (Kami Wa Saikoro Wo Furanai) roughly translates to “God Doesn’t Roll Dice,” which is a bit of a mouthful even in English. Looking back at their past material, I’m not sure this is a group I’ll follow regularly. But, Meguru is firmly in my wheelhouse. Looking back at my two favorite J-pop singles last year, it’s clear that I love a surging, melodic anthem. Shockingly, when I think of “surging anthem,” my mind doesn’t immediately go to social media platform TikTok. Yet, Meguru Meguru is apparently a TikTok CM. Very odd.

Regardless, as a song this is pure bliss. Right from the start, Meguru pulses with galvanizing energy, opening with a tease of its chorus before propelling into a guitar-fueled instrumental. The verses move at a gallop, underpinned by percolating electronics. And as we enter the chorus, the song really picks up steam. The melody here is gorgeous – cathartic and satisfying as it moves through several distinct segments. Vocalist Shusaku Yanagita gives an impassioned performance, never overwrought but always affecting. It’s just too good not to share with all of you!
