Song Review: BM (KARD) – 13IVI

KARD’s BM and I often live on different musical planets, but I appreciate the energy and swagger he brings to the industry. With the group’s future uncertain, the time is right for a solo project. And judging from the title of his single album (The First Statement), BM is playing the long game. Nonetheless, title track 13IVI is the heavy, blustering hip-hop single you’d expect to hear from him.

The first thing you’ll notice about this song is its prominent beat. Clattering percussion soon gives way to a slapping groove, giving the instrumental an overwhelming energy. When it comes to hip-hop, I love this style of maximalist production. It’s a good match for BM’s larger-than-life personality, and keeps the vibe rambunctious and exciting. When 13IVI eventually transitions to a more minimal beat before its finale, the switch is signaled by an injection of synths that lend the track great momentum and prevent it from becoming too repetitive.

Unfortunately, I’m not as big a fan of BM’s performance. This is entirely based on personal taste, but I wish he’d take it down a notch. He shouts throughout most of the song, and with a beat so intense I’m not sure he needed to match its loud delivery. 13IVI’s chorus is also a chanted shout, making the song feel a little one-note. I would have loved to hear more dynamics within both the flow and overall volume. Still, I can’t fault BM for doing what he does best. His personality comes through, and it’s hard not to get swept up in the frenzy.
