Reviewing Every KIS-MY-FT2 Single: Ki.Su.U.Ma.I (Kiss Your Mind)
In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.
Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!
Ki.Su.U.Ma.I (Kiss Your Mind) (2013)
For me, this is where Kis-My-Ft2’s singles run starts to get a little more inconsistent – at least for a year or two. They’d eventually rebound in a major way. Of all the singles from this era, Kiss Your Mind is not a personal favorite. It’s a bit shouty for me, turning the intensity up to eleven and never really taking a moment to breathe. I’ve come around to it with time (especially in a live setting), but I still don’t seek it out on its own.
I do appreciate Kiss Your Mind’s sheer confidence. It opens in full glory, delivering its chorus right off the bat. I also enjoy the rapped verses, which pull in some of the rock influences that often drive the group’s sound. There’s a lot going on in this track… definitely no empty or wasted space.
While I’m a little hesitant on the song, the music video is a ton of fun. It’s quirky and cheesy in the classic Kisumai way and includes some of their most iconic imagery (the lip-shaped hair styles, the ‘stacked heads’ choreo at the opening). If nothing else, you will definitely be entertained!
