Headliner Lacuna Coil performed at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 15, joined by supporting acts Unearth and Versus Me.

Versus Me, a metalcore band from Janesville, Wisconsin, formed in 2014, opened the night. One of my photojournalists had covered their earlier show at Bourbon, but this was my first chance to see them live. Their set was impressive, filled with energetic performances and a great connection with the audience, making the show thoroughly enjoyable. Their setlist was well-balanced—neither too long nor too short. Definitely check them out if you get the opportunity.

Next up was Unearth, a metalcore band from Boston, who fired up the evening for a small yet passionate crowd. Unearth has spent nearly three decades opening and co-headlining a diverse range of events, from metal tours and major European metal festivals to the iconic Warped Tour. Frontman Trevor Phipps eagerly encouraged a circle pit during some songs, but participation was limited as most fans preferred to simply enjoy and listen to the live music. Lead guitarist Buz McGrath, rocking a Dr. Dre shirt, delivered an awesome riff. Drummer Dylan Watson filled in for Mike Justian, who was busy with his other band Madball, during May and absolutely nailed it. His drumming performance was outstanding! He has tons of drumming videos on his YouTube channel, so be sure to check them out—and don’t forget to hit subscribe! Their final classic, ironically titled “The Great Divider,” urged unity—a paradox not missed as the crowd joyfully collided in celebration. Unearth still set the bar high for the rest of their set.

Finally, I was ecstatic when Lacuna Coil took the stage, since I haven’t seen their live show before. Lacuna Coil, an Italian gothic metal band formed in Milan in 1994, is driven by the dynamic and complementary vocals of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, keeping their momentum strong over the years. They’ve released nine studio albums, with their 10th, Sleepless Empire, hitting the shelves a few months ago via Century Media Records. The lineup includes bassist Marco Coti Zelati, drummer Richard Meiz, and their newest guitarist, Daniele Salomone.

They kicked off with the song “Layers of Time,” taken from their ninth studio album, Black Anima. The set featured tracks from Sleepless Empire, such as “Hosting the Shadow,” “I Wish You Were Dead,” and “Gravity,” and concluded with the classic “Nothing Stands in Our Way.”

Fantastic set with amazing energy and sound from the band, making for a thoroughly enjoyable gig and an impressive turnout for a Thursday night.

Just two shows left in the USA before heading off to Europe next month: Wooly’s in Des Moines tonight, Friday, May 16, and Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, May 18!

A big thanks to 104.1 the Blaze for bringing them back to Lincoln.
