On Saturday, July 19, Alabama Shakes made their triumphant return to the Omaha metro area, their first in ten years. They played a rip-roaring set at the Astro Amphitheater in La Vista, Nebraska. There was a little overcast, but the show went off without a hitch, with the audience loving every minute of it.
Lee Fields was the sole opener for the concert. This 75-year-old man had more energy on stage than many young adults do right now. I was impressed with his swagger and attitude. At one point, he was chatting with the gentlemen in the crowd, asking if that was their lady sitting next to him and giving them their respect. The man was born to entertain the masses. I went in knowing he had a James Brown vibe to him, and I get it. His backing band, the Expressions, was musically talented, including a great two-piece horn section. Be sure to check out his latest album, Sentimental Fool.
The crowd was now ready for Alabama Shakes. They had quite a bit of greenery on stage; it looked like they were in the swamplands of Alabama. Which made sense, why they went onstage to “Run Through the Jungle” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. These Grammy Award-winning artists know how to put on a show. Brittany Howard, lead singer and guitarist, sang her heart out for this audience. I was also impressed by her guitar playing, playing that Gibson SG with a whole lot of soul. No one like her is doing it the way she is right now. It has been since 2017 that Alabama Shakes got together to tour the country, and they sounded fresh as ever. It was amazing to hear from Ms. Howard said that she and fellow bandmates, bassist Zac Cockrell and guitarist Heath Fogg, have been playing music together since high school. They are bandmates for life, and I appreciate that they can still go out and give it their all, even after a lengthy hiatus. Also backing them were these backup singers, who added some color, musically, to their performance. I love that Alabama Shakes are back together now, and I hope we get some new music from them real soon.
