Synth pioneer Gary Numan delivered a scorching, industrial-charged performance at The Admiral on Tuesday, October 2, 2025, proving once again that age has no meaning.
Lauren Andino and Glenn Fryatt who make up the L.A. based shoegaze/alternative outfit, Tremours, delivered a hazy and hypnotic set as the opening act for synth-pop legend Gary Numan. Before the show, I had a chance to speak with Lauren at her merch table. We spoke of other L.A. based bands like Poppy Jean Crawford and Starcrawler, who, by the way, will be at The Reverb on October 5th. When they are on stage, you are bathed in swirling lights and drenched in sound. Equal parts My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive and, as one of the people in attendance told me, they reminded him of the Cocteau Twins. Their last four songs were flooded with emotion and their vocals buried just enough to feel like a dream. For a band relatively new to the national stage, Tremours left us with a reminder of exactly how music should be presented, and I’m pretty sure they left with tons of new fans. Be sure to check out their debut album “Fragments” which is available here
But it was Gary Numan who turned The Admiral into a cathedral of sound. Bathed in strobes and shadow, he launched into “Halo” with a stage presence that was both menacing and magnetic. Numan’s voice was in top form, cutting through the industrial haze with haunting clarity. The visuals relied heavily on lighting, smoke, and minimalist backdrops which created an atmosphere that pulled the crowd into his world. He performed “Cars” and “My Name is Ruin” back-to-back, which to me was the highlight of the performance. By the encore, which closed with a thunderous rendition of “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”, the audience was fully invested. The show in general was a true testament to Numan’s enduring power as a performer and innovator. It was a thrilling set, as it was, when he performed in Omaha in 2018 and 2022, and just like those previous dates, this was once again the show of the year.
Big thank you to the staff at The Admiral. They worked hard and tirelessly to get media passes for this event. Always a great place to cover and see a show.
