‘Be My Lover’, from The Infamous HER, was written in a rental house while the band was on tour, and was revived nearly fifteen years later.
Opening with a deep fuzzy bassline, it quickly pulls listeners in, as if we’re front and centre at one of the performances the band did in their earliest days. It’s pure, unfiltered, classic rock and roll, and tells a tale as old as time. The narrator has identified the lies in their lover’s cutesy sentiments, and is quite sure that his declarations of love “don′t mean a thing”. She’s no lover scorned, however, she takes control, and with two hands on the mic, and flames flashing in her eyes, she points to the dance floor, and dares him to try and win her back. Her demands are echoed in the soaring electric guitars and the relentless rock drumming, which drives the pulse of the song.
The music video for ‘Be My Lover’ invites viewers into the band’s recording studio. Using a 360 degree camera, we spin around, as they rip into a performance of electrifying proportions. While at first it might appear that they’re adhering to the status quo of garage rock, it’s soon clear that they’ve actually turned everything on its head, with Staffile adorned with an amazing moustache, and her male bandmates wearing cute pigtails, and flouncy dresses.
