The idea behind using placeholder content is simple: dropping real tracks too early in the production process can disrupt the rhythm before the final mix hits the right note.

Last weekend Troye Sivan released ‘She’s the Best‘, which is the first single and title track of his upcoming fourth album scheduled for release on October 9. Having been born in Johannesburg and brought up in Perth, Sivan achieved success beginning with his early YouTube videos and his role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before going on to record full-length albums such as Blue Neighbourhood, Bloom and the ARIA-winning Something to Give Each Other. Singles from the 2023 album earned him Grammy nominations, and his later SWEAT tour with Charli xcx increased his audience at live concerts. He has also taken part in Boy Erased alongside Nicole Kidman and is still a regular presence in today’s pop music with worldwide album sales in the tens of millions.

Musically the song sits in a restrained mid-tempo pocket, driven by a cyclical drum loop, record scratches, and understated guitar that keep the arrangement lean. Sivan’s delivery stays close to speech as he lists the habits and appearance of an independent night-owl figure who books DJ sets across the week and handles online arguments without hesitation. The chorus stays minimal and repeated, giving way near the close to a faster section featuring a short Charli xcx vocal. Co-writers and producers include Jack Antonoff, George Daniel, Leland, and Styalz Fuego. In the accompanying clip directed by Gordon von Steiner, Nicole Kidman moves from street to club dressing room to dance floor, with Sasha Colby among the cast; Sivan performs onstage and later joins the drag scenes.

Troye Sivan revealed: “‘She’s the Best’ is a painting that captures my life in all of its moods and colors. It explores the high-octane highs of the last few years, and the solitude and longing that sat underneath. It’s chaotic, layered, organic, troubled and alive. It feels like the truest and most creative version of myself I’ve ever shared. At some point along the way I realized – the only constant in my life keeping me somewhat sane has not been the work, or the men, but the feminine. Thank god for them.”
