Bloodkin’s New Single ‘Enemy Within’ Is Enticing First Taste Of New Album ‘Flowers & Ash’
Released on the 31st of July, Bloodkin’s new single, ‘Enemy Within’ is from their latest album, ‘Flowers & Ash’. The first since the death of founding member Eric Carter’s bandmate, songwriting partner and lifelong friend, Daniel Hutchens, in 2021, the 40 minute album is a celebration of the band’s 4th decade, Carter’s 60th year, and serves as both a tribute and continuation of what Bloodkin are all about.
The new single brings in elements that longtime Bloodkin fans will know well – raw rock riffs brought about by enticing guitar licks, held together with a steady drumbeat and vocal harmonies that call on the listener to join in. A sleek and soulful saxophone draws it all in at the end, the complete article evoking the likes of The Rolling Stones at their height, along with elements reminiscent of Tom Petty – and probably plenty more along the way.
Daniel Hutchens’ spirit is woven right through ‘Flowers & Ash’, and rightly so. Eric had known him since he was 7 years old, and by the time he turned 16, they were a songwriting partnership that could never be separated. But the album may never have happened if it wasn’t for the efforts of Bloodkin supporter, Carison Stokes, who brought in Betsy Franck and Tori Pater, leading to a thriving new era for Bloodkin. Following a serious accident, and working through PTSD and depression, Eric Carter discovered a renewed purpose, and, thanks to therapy and the encouragement of his bandmates, as well as the support of his extended musical family, is now able to prove that, even forty years after their journey began, there’s still plenty of chapters to go in Bloodkin’s story.
