On Thursday, April 30, AFI (A Fire Inside) made their return to Omaha to play the Admiral on their Holy Visions Tour. They don’t come to Omaha a whole lot, but they first were here in 1996, playing at the Cog Factory, which doesn’t exist any more.
Choir Boy from Salt Lake City was the opener and direct support. This four piece synthpop act was very ethereal and new wavy. They used a drum machine for their performance. Led by Adam Klopp, he had such a soulful voice and really gave it his all for the audience. Shout out to Jeff Kleinman, who used a saxophone during the performance. It wasn’t an opener I would expect from an AFI show, you would think something a little more aggressive, but I was still captivated. And I think that’s punk rock, going against the norm.
Finally, the packed Admiral audience of mostly emo millennials were ready for the return of NoCal’s own AFI. I knew Davey Havok was one of the best frontmen ever, but seeing it in person really cemented that. I’ve never seen that many fifty year olds move like that in my life, really using the microphone stand and swinging around the mic, going from one side of the stage to another, getting into the front of the crowd, as well as jumping very high. The guy was giving 110% through the whole show. The whole band, whose lineup has remained intact since the late 90s, performed so damn well. It was like watching a well oiled machine. They played a good chuck off of their latest album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, as well as classic AFI tracks like “Miss Murder”, “Girl’s Not Grey”, and “Silver and Cold”. I thought it was a really solid return for the guys in AFI and I hope it doesn’t take them nearly ten years to return to Omaha.
