If you’re a fan of old school hard rock, Tuesday, November 11th, at the Bourbon Theater in Lincoln Nebraska was the place to relive the Bon Scott era of AC/DC and the Ozzy Osbourne era of Black Sabbath. Fans were treated to two of the most talented groups paying homage to 70’s rock classics in Bonfire, the AC/DC tribute and Zakk Sabbath, Zakk Wylde’s tribute to Black Sabbath, and it was some of the best renditions I have ever seen.
Kicking things off was Dark Chapel, the Las Vegas-based newcomers who burst onto the scene in 2024 with their debut album Spirit in the Glass. They delivered a tight 30-minute set that blended brooding goth-metal with soaring hooks, evoking a mix of melancholy and modern symphonic melodies. They’re the wildcard here—original material on a tribute-heavy bill—and they more than held their own.
Next up, Bonfire, the Los Angeles AC/DC tribute act was just amazing. Everyone I talked to said the same thing, “they are better than AC/DC”, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t agree. From Bon Scott to Angus Young, this band nailed the impersonations, the sound and the show! They covered all the Bon Scott era hits like Dog Eat Dog, Dirty Deeds, TNT, Whole Lotta Rosie and Highway to Hell. It was pure Rock and Roll escapism!
Finally, Zakk Wylde—Viking of the six-string, Ozzy-Esque vocals—led his ironclad trio (bassist Blasko from Ozzy/Rob Zombie lore, and drummer Joey Castillo, whose kit work has powered Danzig and Queens of the Stone Age) through a Black Sabbath time warp. As with everything Zakk Wylde does, the musicianship was nothing short of virtuosity. They took the stage with a scathing versions of Supernaut and Snowblind. The show continued resurrecting Fairies Wear Boots & Children of the Grave, ultimately closing out the night with the classics N.I.B. and it wouldn’t have been complete without War Pigs. It was surprising how much Zakk Wylde’s voice sounded like classic Ozzy. The trio did justice to the Sabbath songs in classic Zakk Wylde form. It was a show for the ages!
