Couldn’t have asked for better weather outside in August. As we got the show, Pharcyde was blessing us with their classic catalog. Haven’t seen them before, so this was special for sure. As they have for decades, they killed their set and made my day right out the gate.
Up next was Lupe Fiasco. He was on one for sure. First minute of his set and he had called out his DJ 3 times already and you could tell he wasn’t exactly vibing with Council Bluffs. I do appreciate his calling out the venue for the garbage “VIP” pit set in front of to the ENTIRE stage that goes back probably 30 ft. We have enough class separation already, now you’re gonna add an elitist element to a damn hip hop show, big fail Stir Cove. Lupe’s set was almost comical because he never let up on the pit and an odd fan that just stood and stared him (might I add that the fan had John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer and other serial killers tattooed on the side of his head.
Now to the meat of the show. Atmosphere proved as always that they’ve been doing this at a very high level for a very long time. Such a good performer, Slug knows how to be on stage, but somehow be in the crowd with you at the same time with his appearance and his easily relatable vibe/lyrics. And then we have Cypress Hill. Other than the fact that they did not put a single spotlight on B Real or Sen Dog was different, but they did a stellar performance as only they know how…with a joint in their mouths!! Eric BoBo and the DJ did a performance themselves (a battle of sorts) and it was easily the highlight of the entire show…absolutely stunning!!!
In short, rocky start, but redeemed by an outstanding performance by Cypress Hill.
