The idea behind using placeholder content is simple: dropping real tracks too early in the production process can disrupt the rhythm before the final mix hits the right note.

Fate Intervenes With Heavy Kid’s Latest Single, ‘Day By Day’

Out of Pensacola, Florida, Heavy Kid’s latest single, ‘Day By Day’, from their upcoming third album, is a much-needed anthem to all those out there who are learning to “let it go”.

Heavy Kid are as synonymous with their hometown of Pensacola, Florida, as Prince was with Minneapolis, or Bruce Springsteen is with Asbury Park. Although the band was only formed in 2009, all five members were active in that city’s scenes as early as the 1980s, their acts crossing paths, and often sharing stages. Speaking about this link, drummer and vocalist Ben Bogan says,

“We’re from Pensacola and are part of it. We always like to showcase our home”.

It was like the members were fated to come together, and since their formation they’ve become clear fan favourites in their own right, and opened for the likes of Everclear, Soul Asylum, Built to Spill, Drivin-N-Cryin, and more. Their passion and drive to create has never wavered, and their bond never faded, even when life pulled them across different phases. Fate has once more intervened for their third album, ‘Five-Line Farewell’. Ben Bogan found a paper flower, made from sheet music, some years ago while he was setting up to play at a funeral reception for his good friend Michael Kirby, a local club regular at popular venues like The Handlebar. That same flower is now on the cover of their new album, a musical tribute to the many friends and family members lost during its creation. But the album doesn’t just honour the past; it also represents a future where their sound and legacy, as well as their city, can be heard, louder than ever before.

“We thought it would be nice to give a musical farewell to the friends and family we have lost over the past few years”, said Bogan. “People who were important in our lives”.

Written by vocalist and guitarist Brian Gore, ‘Day By Day’ has clearly been inspired by Tom Petty, an artist that Heavy Kid cite as being one of their major influences. Gravelly vocals supported by powerful instrumentals, the track feels as though the band saw themselves performing on stage as it was written. It’s tailor-made for an intimate venue, yet could also hold its own in an arena. With a steady rock drum, fuzzy guitars, and harmonies that have been woven so tightly together it’s impossible to separate them, it’s also got soaring guitar and bass solos, interspersed with slow interludes and explosive bursts. These however aren’t the things that will stick with the listener after it’s finished; the refrain, asking if you’re alright, are you okay – are you alright just day by day – that’s what remains.

The music video, shot by Flick Wiltshire at The Elbow Room, a local pub and pizza restaurant, is perfect. Patrons comprising a star-studded lineup of real-life Pensacola staples and longtime supporters, line up and fill the venue, to be served by the band themselves. This is interspersed with scenes of the band performing in a warehouse, their name graffiti-tagged on the wall. It’s a clip that’s as moving as the song itself, inspiring to check on our friends and loved ones, to make sure that they’re doing alright, that they’re okay – just day by day.
