Marshall took over independent venue Parish for three full days last week in Austin. The Marshall Funhouse — free and open to locals and anybody in town for SXSW — featured day shows and night shows, and a circus tent in the parking lot next door that was filled with carnival games, food vendors, DJs, and more.
The diverse lineup — booked with help from local Austin promoters and longtime BrooklynVegan homies Resound Presents — showcased an assortment of music from across multiple genres and countries, including national headliners who could play venues much bigger, and Austin favorites like Die Spitz, Octopus Project, Farmer’s Wife, and Daiistar. Kids from the local School of Rock got to open the shows each day on the Parish stage, AND keep all the Marshall backline after the events were over.
Thursday night was the Marshall Records showcase featuring five bands from the label, and one group of indie legends known for playing in front of giant Marshall stacks. Dinosaur Jr. certainly contributed to this being one of the hardest shows of the week to get in to, but the lineup was strong start to finish with buzzy up-and-coming UK post-punk revivalists King Nun opening, and even younger UK punks Noah and the Loners finishing the night off full of energy, despite their 1am set time. Up second were UK feminist punk trio Dream Nails with a catchy set of protest anthems. Kid Bookie and a full backing band then turned it up a notch with a set of Slipknot-approved, rap-infused alt-metal that sucked me in, and clearly did not disappoint the entire crowd waiting for J Mascis, Murph & Lou who were up next. Dinosaur Jr. proceeded to play a career-spanning, ear-shattering set, and J also took a moment to acknowledge how he helped make Marshall amps cool to the indie crowd who previously thought they were just for metal bands, a point he touched on again afterwards:
“Marshall show was fun, seeing young and old bands playing through Marshall amps. They can do it all. Sometimes people only think of heavy metal bands playing through Marshalls, but they work equally well with all kinds of music. Clean or dirty. Marshall won’t let you down. If it’s good enough for Hendrix, Stooges and MC5 it’s good enough for me. My favourite guitar tone of all time is the first Stooges album, and that was a marshall stack!!! There’s a solid dependable quality to the Marshall sound you don’t get with other amps.” – J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
After Dinosaur and before Noah came yet another legend, and a rarity. Irish alt-rock heroes Therapy? flew in just for this show. It was their first U.S. gig in like 20 years, and in the year that happened to be the 30th anniversary of their classic album Troublegum. It felt special to be there for it, and collectively it made for a 6-hour show that never slowed down.
Speaking of Hendrix, that day started with an engaging panel featuring Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix (with whom Marshall has a long-standing partnership to support the Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation) in conversation with Austin musicians Zach Blair of Rise Against (and ex-GWAR) and Alex Maas of The Black Angels (who played the next day). Moderated by Marshall’s Megan Devereux, the topic was the power of community. They talked about how a company like Marshall can give back to musicians, the importance of access to mental health resources (shoutout SIMS Foundation who also had a table at the event all three days), and more. The Black Angels-curated Levitation Fest (fka Austin Psych Fest) is one way Alex said he’s able to support not just the Austin scene, but younger bands he believes in from all over the country and world, and both musicians talked about how they try to carefully pick bands to take on tour when they can.
The Black Angels‘ headlining set the next day was another major, mind-melting bright spot. Long-running UK folk punks Skinny Lister made day one a party and went perfectly with that day’s headliner Frank Turner who delivered a powerful solo performance in the intimate venue after an equally great set by reactivated post-hardcore greats Sparta. Other highlights of the three days included wild Nashville egg punks Snooper, NYC fashionable post-punks Cumgirl8, and Australian indie rockers Girl and Girl whose debut LP is out on Sub Pop in May. Sadly, Dry Cleaning needed to drop off last-minute due to a medical emergency. We hope they’re doing okay!
When not watching bands, or even if you didn’t come inside the venue, there was plenty to do including learning more and interacting with the great organizations on site, including the aforementioned SIMS Foundation, and Women in Vinyl whose mission is “to empower women, female-identifying, non-binary, LGBTQ+, BIPOC and otherwise marginalized humans working in the industry to create, preserve and improve the art of music on vinyl.” Vinyl was also available to listen to (with Marshall headphones of course), and purchase. Design shop Feels So Good (FSG) was there live screen printing limited edition swag for those lucky enough to get it before it ran out. Bands were also invited backstage to get their guitars serviced, try out different Marshall amps, receive gifts from Ernie Ball, and have custom earplugs made by Musicares.
Local food vendors included Bad Larry Burger Club, Zee’s Wiener System, CTRUS Lemonade, and Cloud 9 Cotton Candy. While eating, waiting in line, hanging with the live Marshall mascots, playing ring toss, or just exploring the outdoor carnival that the pros at Ad.Ventures helped produce, you got to enjoy DJ sets by Queer Vinyl Collective, Ian Orth, Hi Tech, and more.
It was a great few days. Thanks to Marshall for hosting us, and check out more photos of all the fun — by Pooneh Ghana and Ismael Quintanilla III — below…
