Across three releases, Aimers have shown plenty of potential but haven’t quite caught my ear. The teasers for new single Somebody hinted a potentially spectacular showcase, and against my better judgement I set expectations far too high. As such, the full song’s fragmented approach leaves me wanting.

If the entire song had the driving energy of its chorus, I might be raving about another early-2024 standout. Instead, Somebody employs a classic ‘slow verses, bombastic chorus’ formula. This can pay off if both segments are equally strong and interact in a way that builds and releases tension. Unfortunately, there’s not much to Somebody‘s simple chorus and its verses feel like place-holder time killers.

A rush of guitar-fueled energy buoys Somebody‘s best moments, compensating for a simple melody with plenty of instrumental heft. On its own, I enjoy this hook quite a bit. It could stand to be even bigger — especially where performance is concerned — but it gets the job done. The verses often feel cut from a different song, failing to bring much continuity or build to the overall arrangement. Even so, this is my favorite song from Aimers yet. It just needs some tightening and focus to truly soar.
