Boy group HORI7ON continue to dole out bright, energetic pop music, taking funky cues from early Seventeen with new single Lucky. Though I’ve enjoyed much of their recent material, this group has often been held back by a level of polish that makes their music feel more like an imitator than an innovator.

Lucky takes a tried-and-true, Uptown Funk style approach with effusive brass and catchy chanted hooks. This exact template has been done many times before and seems to lose a bit of oomph each time. HORI7ON put their all into the performance, but the deliver is too silly (obnoxious?) for me. The hooks don’t land and a mid-song instrumental shift upends the energy. I admire their zest, but this is one funk party I won’t be returning to.
