Song Review: Kang Daniel & Ahn Yujin (IVE) – Move Like This (ft. Kim Yuna)
Over the past few years, Starship Entertainment’s Pepsi (or in this case, Gatorade) CFs have become a reliable summer tradition, bringing together a diverse array of artists. Apparently, they don’t have to be part of Starship’s roster to participate. And in the case of Move Like This, they don’t even have to be professional singers! The song unites Kang Daniel with IVE’s Ahn Yujin and… figure skater Kim Yuna. Hey, whatever works!
I don’t know what it says about the state of the K-pop industry, but this random CF collaboration is the strongest song to come out of today’s heavy-hitter comebacks. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but the synth-heavy beat harnesses a great energy that feels emblematic of summer. Better yet, the instrumental adheres to its strengths, filtering in and out yet never straying too far from the exciting riff that opens the track. This sense of continuity means that, even when the vocal delivery switches up, Move Like This doesn’t lose momentum. The track knows what it’s doing and never tries to do too much.
To Kim Yuna’s credit, her performance fits perfectly well alongside her more-experienced collaborators. It helps that the song is so brisk and lively. This isn’t a vocal showcase, and you probably could have enlisted any idol to deliver it in a similar fashion. Instead, Move Like This thrives on addictive energy. I love its punchy synths. As you’d expect for a Gatorade advertisement, the whole package is incredibly refreshing. Now, let’s graft some of these strengths onto actual idol comebacks this summer!
