Song Review: Kis-My-Ft2 – Luv Bias

Despite being one of my favorite Johnny’s acts, I haven’t really loved any of Kis-My-Ft2’s promoted tracks since 2019’s Edge Of Days. I often cite the group’s 2016-18 run as some of my favorite material Johnny’s has ever churned out, and I long for the guys to return with that kind of focus. With that said, new single Luv Bias is quite good. Despite being a slower track, this feels much more like the Kisumai that I first fell in love with.

As the soundtrack to Tamamori’s currently airing drama, Luv Bias is infused with a healthy dose of sentimentality. In that regard, it reminds me of other such Kis-My-Ft2 ballads – especially 2015’s Saigo mo Yappari Kimi. It has a nice variety of melodies, bookended by a stately refrain that hints at – but doesn’t spoil – the chorus.

My favorite aspect of Luv Bias is how the vocals are structured. They overlap often, which gives the track a continuous flow as if it’s constantly chasing its own tail. This interplay becomes more complex as the song goes on, with subtle injections of rap coming in between the lines of the final chorus. All the while, Luv Bias’s beat has a satisfying heft, hitting on the upswing to give the track much more rhythm than expected. The guys sound great as well, their voices layered in a crisp, effective arrangement. When I think of Kis-My-Ft2, my mind doesn’t instantly go to ballads. But, this has long been an underrated segment of their discography, and Luv Bias is right up there with the best of them.
