First off, the phrase “blank effect” pretty much describes my reaction to the majority of K-pop this year!
Secondly, I really like Park Jihoon as an idol but often struggle to embrace the music he makes. When he hits it out of the park, the result is super impressive — like this or this. But often, his title tracks veer down a murkier route. Blank Effect succumbs to this style and it’s a real slog to get through.
Though others might enjoy it, I just can’t get into the style of lurching beat that underlines Blank Effect (무표정). It doesn’t strike me as a pleasant sound, and without a compelling melody to spark interest the song feels sluggish and dull.
