Yugyeom pre-released a track last week as his first work since signing with hip-hop label AOMG. Now, he’s taking full advantage of the agency’s roster and employing Gray as guest producer/artist on All Your Fault (네 잘못이야). I’ve been a longtime fan of Gray’s beats, as they often feel timeless in execution. And even if this song isn’t what I’d usually gravitate toward, the collaboration helps to establish Yugyeom’s newfound credentials.
To be honest, once this initial blitz of GOT7 solo debuts has concluded, I’ll probably pick and choose which comebacks to cover on this site. The members seem to be leaving idol life behind, along with many of the sounds that come with it. This is to be expected at this point in their career, and it’s gratifying to see them take charge of their own artistry. However, I’m not a huge fan of the styles most members are pursuing, so I’ll leave discussion to others.
As for All Your Fault, I think it’s absolutely fine. The track has an enjoyable, laidback groove. It’s not one of Gray’s more memorable productions, but it’s not trying too hard to be a big moment. The skittering percussion reminds me of late-90’s Timbaland, updated with modern touches. That sense of ease makes for a pleasant listen. Yugyeom’s vocals have an airy appeal, layered on the chorus to create a satisfying texture. Coupled with his skills as a dancer, I could see his solo career having real legs. This may not be a particularly momentous start, but All Your Fault‘s slinky, subdued nature goes down easy.
**On a related note, let me indulge my inner child for a moment. From first listen, all I could hear in the chorus was: “this is how you fart.” Anyone else? It’s super distracting…
