Staind headlined the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday, May 5th. Supporting acts for this date of the Tailgate Tour were Tim Montana, Saint Asonia, and Seether.
Tim Montana hails from, you guessed it, Montana. He prefaces his work with a little bit of background about his life. He grew up near Butte in a single-wide trailer with no electricity. Montana mentioned that later in life he had a VHS tape of the movie Navy SEALs starring Charlie Sheen that he watched over and over. Charlie Sheen reached out and wanted to meet Tim. The encounter ended up with Sheen directing his music video for the song Mostly Stoned. Thinking back on how he got where he is today, his advice for the crowd was “Wake up, work hard, dream big.” He then closed out his set with his radio hit Devil You Know, and the crowd sang along.
Next was Saint Asonia, fronted by Adam Gontier former vocalist of Three Days Grace. I didn’t tell my husband that Gontier was in the band before the show, and he was very pleasantly surprised. There were definitely some other members of the crowd that night who were also ecstatic to learn who they’d be watching. These guys are obviously not newbies at putting on a killer show. All of the members owned the stage instantly, and their presence held strong from start to finish. They performed a few of Three Days Grace’s songs, and they were a huge hit with the crowd. Their performance of Riot was the highlight of the night for me, and from the sound of it, it was for everyone else too. Saint Asonia is a pleasure to watch.
Seether took the stage next, veiled by heavy smoke and dark, ambient lighting. The set started off very moody. It somehow felt like a small, intimate show, even in such a large arena. The band took long, dark breaks between every song, which was something I’d never seen before. It filled the arena with a palpable sense of suspense. Shaun Morgan’s voice is beautiful and strong, and it complimented the theatrical atmosphere that the band created. Their performance of Remedy was so much fun and was one of the crowd favorites.
Staind took the stage behind a drop cloth, adding to the excitement of the now buzzing crowd. When it dropped, fans were screaming and rearing to go. It wasn’t long, however, until they slowed things down with their song Something to Remind You. Fans swayed and sang along. Later in the set, their song Wannabe brought out a really healthy mosh pit for an arena show on a Sunday night. More impressive than some that I’ve seen at metal shows, and I wasn’t expecting that. Several crowd surfers made it to the barrier, and people were having the time of their lives. Overall, I’d say it was my favorite part of the setlist for being the most energetic moment of the night. The visuals were beautifully done and added a lot to the listening experience. Staind ended the night on a perfect note with their hit song Mudshovel.
