Sturgill Simpson Announces New Album The Ballad of Dood and Juanita

Sturgill Simpson has announced his first album of new and original material since 2019’s Sound & Fury. The new record is titled The Ballad of Dood and Juanita and is scheduled for a digital and CD release on August 20; a vinyl edition will follow on December 3. The album includes a guest spot from Willie Nelson on “Juanita.” Find the tracklist below.

“I just wanted to write a story—not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back,” Sturgill Simpson said in a statement. The singer-songwriter also called his album “a simple tale of either redemption or revenge” and a “rollercoaster ride through all the styles of traditional country and bluegrass and mountain music that [he loves], including gospel and a cappella.”

According to a press release, Simpson wrote and recorded The Ballad of Dood and Juanita in less than one week. He made the album with the same musicians with whom he recorded last year’s Cuttin’ Grass LPs.
