On Tuesday, August 5, thousands of people packed the Pinewood Bowl in Lincoln, Nebraska, to see “Weird Al” Yankovic deliver a performance of a lifetime. The weather was not too bad, and the good vibes were all around to see one of music’s prodigies.

Puddles Pity Party was the opener for the night. He is more than just a clown. He was an excellent singer and had a fun sense of humor. Puddles was also bringing up people to help him with his bits, like when he sang this song in Spanish about tequila, he had someone where a tequila bottle costume. He was also very innovative, going out to the crowd with this camera that would record to the video board, at first a crying cam, and then a rocking out cam. Also, loved his “infatuation(?)” with Kevin Costner, showing various stills and clips of his movies. He also did a unique cover of “Crazy Train”, paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. Puddle Pity Party couldn’t have been a better opener for “Weird Al”.

“Weird Al” was ready for the Lincoln crowd. We see him with a camera following him as he walks and sings “Tacky”, even throwing a pie in Puddles’s face. The crowd roared when he hit the stage. I was quite impressed with his commitment to the bit. Whether it be the costume changes and bringing out the 501st Legion for “The Saga Begins”, I was awestruck by how much fun he still has doing this. Even the backing band has so much fun doing this, including the members who have been playing with him for years. I feel like not enough people talk about his accordion playing, and I just want to say he was on fire. There were also these clip packages of him throughout the years, mostly of him inserting himself into press junket interviews, where it seems like he was there in the room to garner a laugh from the audience. So many people were waiting for him to perform “Amish Paradise” and the wait was worth it. He and his band were decked out in full Amish gear (i.e. fake beard and old-timey clothes). And then you have Yankovic rapping these lyrics about Amish life, which was a sight to see. They ended the show with “Yoda”, which allowed the crowd to sing-along, and the band during the middle did this group chant-like performance that looked like it was well-rehearsed, and I applaud them for how well it came across. “Weird Al” Yankovic blew me away comedically and musically. I highly recommend checking him out live, even if you are familiar with a couple of songs of his. He is an amazing performer, and you will get your money’s worth.
