Singing In The Rain (Joochan & Bomin)

Based upon genre alone, Singing In The Rain was always going to be a low point for me on Game Changer. I’m simply not a fan of this jazzy coffeehouse style. I appreciate what it accomplishes and understand why others would flock to it, but it’s just not the energy I prefer in pop music.

However, I’m all for Rain’s unit pairing! Joochan is probably my favorite idol vocalist of this generation, and Bomin really thrives when his voice is pitched in a lower register. Their opposing tones compliment each other. In fact, the duo once covered Seventeen’s 9-TEEN to great success. Ever since then, I’ve been eager to hear their voices come together again.

Unsurprisingly, the two knock it out of the park. Even though I find Singing In The Rain quite boring as a song, it’s lovely to listen to. The opening rainfall effect immediately sets the mood. The midtempo instrumental paints a drowsy energy, peppered by twinkling keys and percussion that sounds like splashing puddles. The melody has an amiable lightness, skirting here and there without ever landing on a forceful refrain. Joochan and Bomin join together often in harmony, but there are plenty of moments that showcase their individual vocal colors as well. It all comes together to craft a vibe you could get lost in, vividly painting the scenery of a cozy, rain-soaked day.

I would have placed Singing In The Rain later in the track list so it didn’t feel as jarring on the heels of the bombastic Fanfare, but this is a very sweet song regardless.
