On Monday, October 3, Iron Maiden made their long-awaited return to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, an over-thirty-year drought from this powerhouse band, on their Legacy of the Beast World Tour. Having never covered a concert in Sioux Falls before, I didn’t know what to expect. South Dakota has a ton of diehard metalheads. The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center was an amazing venue to put on this concert. It was a great night for heavy metal.

Symphonic metal band Within Temptation from the Netherlands was the opener for the concert. Led by lead singer Sharon den Adel, this band was made for arenas, with their anthemic music. Only have been on a handful of North American tours in their 25+ year career, seeing them play their first North American arena was incredible. Sharon den Adel’s operatic voice traveled well across the arena. She gave a proper tribute to Ukraine in their performance. Iron Maiden crowds usually just want to see Iron Maiden, but this crowd was very receptive to these guys. I look forward to their eighth studio album when that releases next year.

Metal legends Iron Maiden were ready to decimate South Dakota. “Scream for me Sioux Falls!” echoes the entire arena from lead singer Bruce Dickinson. This band continues to bring it to the live stage. Seeing these men in their mid-60s run around onstage while still creating some of the best art is quite a feat to behold. With the many different variants of Eddie, their mascot, it’s always a nice treat along with the performance. I loved that they brought pyrotechnics on this tour, fully cementing that this was an arena metal tour spectacle. The three guitar attack of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers is unlike any other in music, all three phenomenal players. There were people from around the world, specifically Latin America, where Iron Maiden down there is almost like a religion and following them on tour is like their pilgrimage. Everyone was just happy to see this iconic band in their home state, singing the songs and call-and-responsing to Bruce. An amazing night for heavy metal music in South Dakota. Be sure to check out Iron Maiden’s latest album, Senjutsu.
