“Who Am I” feels like an appropriate song title for JD1, because I had to do some research to find out who exactly Jeong Dong Won was before pressing play. It turns out he’s an established trot singer and actor tackling a more traditional “idol” image with this single. I find that turnabout pretty interesting, and it would be even more noteworthy if the music is any good. There’s recent precedent for this actually, as Lim Young Woong reinvented himself with the great throwback EDM of Do Or Die last October.
Who Am I isn’t as exciting as that song, but it’s a convincing makeover. JD1 has found a hyper-rhythmic track to fulfill his idol quest, ably gliding over a brisk dance beat with a performance that echoes the percussion. Not too much about Who Am I rises above “generic,” but it’s a pleasant sort of generic with a chorus that becomes quite addictive as the song goes on.
